As a writer, promoter, MC and roadshow DJ, Kash Sahota has been active in the Asian music industry for fifteen years. His journalism has found an audience through Asian Age, Cineblitz International, Panjab Times and others, featuring increasingly in electronic and online media such as This is Bollywood. Despite his success in many roles, it is as a radio presenter that he has been most influential. His landmark shows, including Kash and Poli on Birmingham’s Radio XL, Aaj Kal on Radio Derby and The Base Lion Rokz! on Apna Radio brought Bhangra to the ears of a modern, young and confident audience. Stepping away from the nostalgic, old fashioned presentation of much of 1980s mainstream community radio, Kash Sahota’s shows energised the airwaves bringing on board lively guests, contemporary music and an English language presentation to win over a new generation of forward-looking Asian youth. For the first time, music charts were compiled and broadcast, giving a sense of immediacy to the music and the artists on the play lists. Across the country young people realised that you didn't have to be a superstar to be on the radio, and this new formula could be applied as effectively in Edinburgh as in Southall. Although an innovator in presentation and promotion, Kash Sahota has a deep respect and regard for the history and traditions of Bhangra, and the “Roots” Punjabi Folk music from which it flows. Kash Sahota is our Bhangra Champion for the East Midlands and Scotland. Comments (1)
